Paragraph editing
Shorten paragraphs. Keep the connections.
Use this paragraph shortener to trim wordy English paragraphs, not replace them with a summary. Keep supporting details and paragraph breaks, then review whether each idea still connects to the next.
Edit paragraphs, keep the thread
Separate paragraphs with a blank line. Your paragraph order stays intact.
English text editing. Guest and account limits are shared with the sentence shortener, not reset per tool. Ctrl/⌘ + Enter runs an edit. Your text is subject to our content policy; see how text is processed.
How to shorten a paragraph without breaking its flow
Paste the complete passage
Include the context your reader needs. Put a blank line between paragraphs so the editor can preserve those boundaries.
Choose the depth of the edit
Balanced trims wordiness; Simple favors accessible wording; Aggressive attempts stronger cuts. Protect names or specialist terms in the terms field.
Review structure as well as length
Compare paragraph counts and read the revision in order. Check that pronouns, transitions and supporting facts still make sense. Copy only after that review.

What to check in revised paragraphs
- The topic sentence still introduces the same point, not a broader or narrower claim.
- Words such as “however,” “because” and “if” still express the correct relationship.
- References such as “this change” or “they” still have a clear antecedent.
- Dates, quantities, exceptions and evidence remain in the right paragraph.
Paragraph shortening is not summarizing
Use this tool when the passage should say the same things more economically. If you need only the main point of a long document, that is a different task. This editor does not intentionally remove supporting facts to create an abstract. A paragraph that is already concise may change very little.
Need a different editing task? Reduce word count to a target. For a single line, use the sentence shortener. See current allowances and plans.
Questions before you edit
Can I shorten more than one paragraph?
Yes, within your current character allowance. Separate paragraphs with a blank line. The editor checks the number of paragraphs and falls back to paragraph-by-paragraph phrase edits if an AI result collapses the structure.
Will every detail and transition be preserved?
The editor is instructed to retain details and checks selected constraints, including numbers and paragraph count. These checks do not prove semantic equivalence. Review names, conditions, emphasis and connections yourself before using the text.
Can I set an exact paragraph length?
This workflow prioritizes paragraph structure rather than a fixed length. Use the word-count reducer for a maximum word budget. It reports when the result is still over the target instead of silently truncating it.
Is the paragraph shortener free?
You can use it within the guest or free-account allowance. Character and usage limits are shared with the other editors. The editor shows your current allowance; paid options and current limits are listed on the pricing page.
