What does “make it shorter” mean in writing?
Making a passage shorter means expressing its message with fewer words. It is not permission to remove a deadline, weaken a warning, or turn a request into a command. Start with repeated ideas and roundabout phrases rather than deleting the details your reader needs. A short message can still sound polite and specific. If the original is already concise, leaving it alone may be the best edit.
How to make it shorter in three steps
Paste the whole message
Include the sentence that supplies the reason or condition. An isolated fragment may not give the editor enough context to preserve your intent.
Choose an editing approach
Use Balanced for a modest trim, Simple for everyday wording, or Aggressive for stronger cuts. Put names and specialist phrases in the terms-to-keep field.
Compare and copy
Review the actual word counts and reread both versions. Check dates, negatives, politeness and emphasis. Copy the revision only when it still communicates what you meant.

Make it shorter vs. shorten text or reduce word count
Use this quick editor when you want a tighter message without choosing a number first. Choose Shorten Text for a passage with several paragraphs, where structure deserves a separate review. Choose Reduce Word Count when you have a maximum word budget and need a clear within-target or over-target result. These tasks can use the same editing engine, but the review you perform should match your writing problem.
Questions before you edit
Can I make it shorter without sounding rude?
Often, yes. Keep a necessary “please,” acknowledgement or explanation. Removing polite context can change the relationship with your reader, even when the remaining words are grammatically correct.
Will it always make my message shorter?
No. A concise original may need little change. Review the measured counts instead of assuming that every suggested edit achieves a reduction.
Can I choose an exact length?
This page has no mandatory word target. Use Reduce Word Count to work toward a maximum of 1–300 words; the tool reports when protecting the facts prevents reaching it.
Is this tool free to use?
